Raytheon, a division of RTX, has landed a $1.1 billion contract modification to significantly increase production of its AIM-9X Sidewinder missile systems. The new funding builds on a previously awarded agreement and includes the manufacture of 1,756 AIM-9X-4 Block II missiles—allocated among the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and multiple foreign military sales (FMS) clients. Additionally, international buyers will receive 242 AIM-9X-5 Block II+ variants.
The expanded contract also covers the production of 187 Captive Air Training Missiles for both domestic and FMS use, along with support items like spare parts, maintenance kits, and sectionalization equipment. These additions aim to support missile training, testing, and operational readiness across both U.S. and allied forces.
Raytheon will carry out the work across more than 20 facilities in the United States, with major operations centered in Tucson, Arizona. Some manufacturing components will be sourced from Canada and Germany. The project is scheduled for completion by October 2028.
The funding for this contract spans several fiscal years (2023–2025), combining procurement and research budgets from both the Navy and Air Force. Approximately $597 million of the funding will support FMS partners. Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Maryland, is managing the contract, which extends from an earlier $736.5 million agreement awarded in October 2024 as part of the AIM-9X Lot 24 production initiative.
